The Royal Shakespeare Company's Macbeth has been lauded as the finest production of Shakespeare's Scottish play for over a quarter of a century.
Staring Anthony Sher in the titular role and Harriet Walter as Lady Macbeth, Macbeth played to packed houses in Stratford, London, and theatres abroad in 2000.
Following sell-out seasons at Stratford’s Swan Theatre and in London, the production played in Japan and in the United States, where The New Yorker praised director Gregory Doran’s interpretation as a “harrowing and disturbingly funny parable for the dawn of the 21st century”.
To make this compelling screen version, Gregory Doran worked with all of the original cast and filmed at London’s Roundhouse. Shot by director of photography Ernie Vincze, the production uses the edgy techniques of fly-on-the-wall documentaries.
An Illuminations production for the RSC in association with Channel 4, 2001.
